GM LEAK: GOVERNMENT MAY HAVE TO BACK TRACK - GEORGE

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 2nd Oct 2003

Commenting on reports, in The Guardian today, that the GM field trial results, due next week, will show that two of the three crops tested should not be grown in the UK, Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Food and Rural Affairs Secretary, said:

"Decisions on GM must be based on sound science.

"If these leaks are proved accurate then the Government will have to face up to decisions they may not have anticipated.

"The future of GM in the UK must be determined by the evidence from farm trials, not by the obsequious 'special' relationship with the United States."
