UNANSWERED QUESTIONS REMAIN OVER GHOST FLEET - BAKER

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 17th Oct 2003

Norman Baker MP

In response to reports that two more vessels in the toxic 'ghost fleet' have left Virginia bound for Hartlepool in Teesside, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, has tabled several Parliamentary Questions to find out what action has been taken by the Government to protect British waters.

Norman Baker said:

"It is extraordinary that more of these decrepit, and potentially dangerous, ships are on their way to Britain when there is no planning permission for a dry dock to receive them.

"There remain many worrying unanswered questions regarding the state of these ships and their contents.

"The Government must explain why it has seemingly taken no action to protect British waters from the toxic ghost fleet."
