GHOST FLEET MUST RETURN TO U.S. - BAKER

12.00.00am GMT Wed 5th Nov 2003

Norman Baker MP

Commenting on the High Court ruling to block any work being carried out on the 'ghost fleet' ships due to arrive in Teesside in mid-November, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"I welcome the High Court judgement that the dismantling of these toxic ships cannot take place.

"But it is a pity it has taken a combination of action from pressure groups, the Liberal Democrats, individuals in Hartlepool and the Environment Agency, for the High Court to reach this decision. The Government should have taken action before they even set sail.

"The only proper course of action now is for the ghost ships to turn around and return to America."
