WATER SHORTAGE THREAT REQUIRES URGENT MEASURES - BAKER

1.08.31pm GMT Thu 27th Nov 2003

Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, has today called for Government action to ensure sufficient water resources in the medium term.

Mr Baker said:

"Water is increasingly becoming a premium product.

"The Government must urgently take steps to reduce water consumption through efficiency measures. To promote efficient use of water in the domestic and business sector we need a water savings trust, based on the energy saving trust model.

"The Government needs to get a grip on the issue rather than simply leaving matters on auto-pilot."
