Ghost fleet ruling: Ships must go back to US - Baker

12.00.00am GMT Mon 8th Dec 2003

Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, has welcomed today's High Court ruling that the licence allowing the ghost fleet to be broken up in Hartlepool 'cannot stand'.

He said:

"This ruling reinforces the view that the legal case for importing these toxic ships simply does not stand up.

"Britain should not be treated as a dumping ground for other countries and the Government must now confirm that it intends to return the ships to America.

"Ministers hope that if they keep quiet on the ghost ship front, the public will forget about them. The Liberal Democrats will not let that happen."
