Biotech giants must be made liable for GM damage to environment - George

12.00.00am GMT Thu 26th Feb 2004

Andrew George MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Rural Affairs Secretary, today challenged reports that the biotech industry is to be made financially liable for any environmental damage caused by GM products.

Leaked minutes from the (SCI(BIO)) Cabinet Committee meeting on 10th February suggest the Government are merely willing to consult on the issue. No decision has yet been made.

Commenting Andrew George MP said:

"The biotech giants have most to gain from the planting of GM crops but remain totally opposed to the idea that they should be liable for the damage their products could cause.

"As it stands no insurance companies will insure farmers and why should taxpayers stump up cash to bail out the GM industry?

"It would be a disgrace for the Government to give the go-ahead for GM crops before they have sorted out this mess."
