Government must accept advice on 4x4 Baker

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 28th Jun 2004

Following Professor David Begg's comments that 4x4 vehicles driven in urban areas should be subject to extra taxation, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, said:

"I am pleased David Begg, the government's senior advisor on transport, has drawn attention to the significant safety and environmental issues associated with the use of 4x4s in urban areas.

"4x4s pollute more, are more dangerous for other road users, and simply take up too much space. My report A 'Programme for Change' proposes changes in taxation and regulation to reflect the damage these vehicles cause.

"I am pleased this call is now getting support from people as senior as David Begg."
