Government must look at new solutions for our gridlocked road - Thurso12.00.00am GMT Thu 10th Feb 2005
Figures released today by the Department for Transport reveal that traffic on British roads is still rising, with a 2.3% increase in overall traffic levels between 2003 and 2004. The figures also reveal an increase of 5% in traffic on motorways in the fourth quarter of 2004 compared with the same period in 2003, and a 10% increase in goods traffic on 'A' roads over the same time period. Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, John Thurso MP, said: "Britain is becoming a gridlocked nation. "The Government needs to give motorists a real incentive to get out of their cars. Until we have a safe, reliable and affordable public transport system, the roads will remain congested. "The Government has shied away from the problem for too long. It's time Ministers made a real commitment to cutting traffic levels, and stuck to it."
